NFL Roster Cut Down Dates, Practice Squads And More

NFL roster cuts are coming next week as teams will cut down from 90 to 75 players and then again from 75 to 53 players.

NFL roster cuts are on their way with two series of cuts set for Monday and Friday of next week. Teams are currently at the 90-player roster limit and by Monday, August 27 at 4 p.m. (ET) they will cut down to 75 players. By Friday, August 31 at 9 p.m. (ET) they will cut down to 53 players.

That means over 400 players will be cut by Monday and over 1,100 by next Friday. This isn’t just an opportunity for teams to cut players -- they will be signing players, too. Teams will be looking to see what players are cut from other teams for potential upgrades as well.

Some players will be cut for ability -- they’re just not good enough. Others will be cut for financial reasons and those are the players that will often be sought after by other teams.

The 90-player roster limit is new as of last year so this year’s roster cuts are the biggest pool of available players the NFL has seen.

By September 1, teams will be creating their eight-man practice squads.

Clubs may establish a Practice Squad of eight players by signing free agents who do not have an accrued season of free agency credit or who were on the 46-player Active List for less than nine regular season games during each of any Accrued Seasons. A player cannot participate on the Practice Squad for more than three seasons.

On September 4, all teams must be salary cap compliant.
