Cowboys hire Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator, according to report

Ex-Southern Cal defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is reportedly on his way back to the pros. He last worked in the NFL for Tampa Bay.

Monte Kiffin will be the Dallas Cowboys' next defensive coordinator, according to a report from ESPN's Ed Werder. Kiffin comes to Dallas after spending the last four seasons as a defensive coordinator at the college level. He resigned from his post at Southern Cal in November.

Kiffin has extensive NFL assistant coaching experience dating back to the 1980s. He got his start with the Green Bay Packers as their linebackers coach in 1983, and he received his first job as a defensive coordinator from the Minnesota Vikings in 1991. He would later move on to New Orleans and Tampa Bay, where he was the defensive coordinator from 1996 through 2008. His efforts helped the Bucs win Super Bowl XXXVII.

The Cowboys recently fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who held that post in Dallas for two seasons. Dallas finished the regular season ranked 19th in the NFL in total defense, and it gave up 25 points per game, which ranked 24th.
