In an ugly game that has included four turnovers, a safety and eight combined penalties, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis is a thing of beauty. With 35- and 61-yard touchdown grabs, Davis has 171 total yards on the day and helped his team to a 22-14 halftime lead over the Arizona Cardinals.
Cardinals vs. 49ers score update: Niners lead, 22-14, at the half behind big day for Vernon Davis
San Francisco’s tight end finished the first half with 171 receiving yards and two scores.
His quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, has had a roller-coaster game that includes two interceptions and the aforementioned strikes to Davis. The 49ers had three early possessions in the red zone, but managed to come away with just six points.
Meanwhile, Carson Palmer has had his share of boom-and-bust fortune. After an early pick, the veteran snapped off a slant to Larry Fitzgerald that the Pro Bowler took 75 yards to the house to give the Cardinals a 7-6 lead. The "bust" part of Palmer's day returned when he was toppled in the end zone for a safety.
The 49ers built on the recaptured lead with two Davis touchdowns, while Arizona countered with a 15-yard scamper by Andre Ellington.
Vernon Davis is on pace to break Flipper Anderson's record of 336 receiving yards in a game, set in a 1989 overtime game the Los Angeles Rams won, 20-17.
