Aaron Hernandez’s fiancee pleads not guilty to lying about destroying evidence

Shayanna Jenkins was in court on Tuesday where she pleaded not guilty to a perjury charge.

Shayanna Jenkins, the fiancee of Aaron Hernandez, pleaded not guilty to a perjury charge on Tuesday, stemming from allegations that she lied to a grand jury, according to the Associated Press.

Jenkins is accused of lying to the grand jury about several facts related to the Hernandez case, including her role in destroying evidence, according to Boston.com. Bristol County prosecutor Patrick Bomberg requested Jenkins be held on $5,000 bail, but Jenkins was released on her own recognizance.

According to Bomberg, the day after Odin Lloyd was killed, Hernandez requested Jenkins collect a box in the basement, put it in a bag with baby clothes, drive off and throw the bag into a dumpster. Bomberg said Jenkins claimed she could not recall where she discarded the box.

“She told the grand jury she dumped [the box] in a dumpster, but she couldn’t tell anybody where it was,” Bomberg said, via Boston.com.

Jenkins’ lawyer said her client did not contradict herself and really did not remember which dumpster she threw the box into. Jenkins will be back in court on Nov. 6 for a pre-trial conference. Hernandez pleaded not guilty to murder and gun charges and is currently being held without bail.
