Jake Locker injury: Titans QB could return Sunday

Jake Locker could return this week, with the Titans hoping to score a big victory over the 49ers at home. The Titans will make their decision Saturday.

Jake Locker could make his return this week when the Tennessee Titans host the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Mike Munchak said Friday that a decision will be made Saturday whether to start Locker or Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback.

Locker was able to return to practice this week after missing the Titans' last two games with a hip injury he suffered in Week 4 against the New York Jets. Projections had the quarterback returning after the team's bye next week, but Locker has reportedly progressed well enough to potentially take over for Fitzpatrick sooner than expected. Munchak confirmed that Locker took more reps than Fitzpatrick in practice Friday.

Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reported that Locker was still wearing a knee brace and sporting a minor limp when he walked Friday, so it’s clear that Locker still isn’t quite 100 percent. That said, Munchak made a point to emphasize that the Titans were not trying to gain an advantage by waiting to name a starter. He said that the team really doesn’t know who will play at this point.

When Locker was cleared for contact earlier this week, the folks at Titans blog Music City Miracles projected Locker to sit and rest with the team’s bye week looming. The Titans need every potential win they can get if they hope to make the playoffs, however, and may be pushing Locker to play as a result.

Locker threw six touchdowns to zero interceptions in four games before being sidelined by injury. Fitzpatrick has thrown two touchdowns to four interceptions in two and a half games since.
