Chargers running back Ryan Mathews finally scored a rushing touchdown on Sunday against the Jaguars, something he had not done in any of his previous 256 carries. The last time that Mathews scored a rushing touchdown was October 7, 2012 against the New Orleans Saints. It is only his third overall touchdown since the beginning of last season.
Ryan Mathews scores 1st touchdown in a year
Mathews finally scored on the ground for the first time in 256 carries and over 12 months. Is this finally the beginning of a breakout?
Fantasy owners who had high hopes for the Chargers back have been consistently disappointed with his lack of production, but he had not been able to even make up for that with a few short touchdown runs. Mathews caught a touchdown against the Texans in Week 1, but that was his only score of the season. He rushed for 102 yards last week against Colts, his first 100-yard game since December 11, 2011.
He is currently at exactly 100 yards against Jacksonville.
Is this just the beginning of the Mathews breakout everyone has been waiting for, or just an aberration? That’s something that we will have to wait to find out, but at least we no longer have to keep waiting for Mathews first rushing touchdown since last October.
