Chargers vs. Jaguars 2013: San Diego wins behind ‘patchwork offensive line’

San Diego took care of business against Jacksonville, putting itself in the playoff conversation.

The San Diego Chargers earned their fourth win of the season on Sunday, beating the winless Jacksonville Jaguars 24-6 at EverBank Field.

San Diego played well all-around, but got inspired play by Philip Rivers, who threw for 285 yards on 22 of 26 passing with a touchdown. The Chargers improved to 4-3 behind a balanced attack that also featured 158 rushing yards for 4.0 yards per carry.

Defensively, San Diego had six sacks of Chad Henne, who was under duress throughout the afternoon.

Over at Bolts From The Blue, John Gennaro wrote about the play of running back Ryan Mathews:

In a “this is exactly what he’s built for” game, Mathews ran the ball 21 times for 110 yards and a goal-line touchdown, and picked up most of those yards behind a patchwork offensive line. It is his second consecutive game with over 100 yards on the ground.

For Jacksonville, it was unfortunately more of the same. The Jaguars held themselves in this contest for a while, but ultimately could not get the job done. Perhaps the lone bright spot was wide receiver Mike Brown who had five catches for 120 yards.

Adam Stites of Big Cat Country talked about the play of Henne, who was largely uninspiring:

At the end of the day though, Henne again racked up yardage and garbage time stats without putting points on the board to show for it. He walked into crucial sacks in big plays and couldn’t shake the team’s offensive production woes.
