Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will be out at least four weeks after suffering a torn groin muscle in the team's Week 7 loss to the Washington Redskins, the team announced on Monday.
Cutler, 30, left Sunday's game in the second quarter to go to the locker room and was initially ruled as questionable to return, although he never did. He was replaced in the game by Josh McCown, who finished the game 14-of-20 passing with 204 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
Through seven games in 2013, Cutler has completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 1,658 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions, leading the Bears to a 4-3 start. After three full 16-game seasons as a starter, Cutler has missed eight games in the last three seasons, including six games in 2011 after suffering a broken thumb.
The Bears are expected to bring back quarterback Jordan Palmer to serve as the backup for McCown. The team will next travel to face the Green Bay Packers in Week 9 after a Week 8 bye.
