Jay Cutler injury: Bears announce Josh McCown as Monday night starter vs. Cowboys

Jay Cutler will be on the sideline once again for the Bears’ matchup against the Cowboys on Monday, thanks to a nagging high ankle sprain.

Jay Cutler will sit out Week 14 for the Chicago Bears, making Josh McCown the starter for Monday night's matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Marc Trestman announced Thursday. Cutler is dealing with a high ankle sprain that has rendered him "week-to-week" since Week 10.

Cutler practiced Thursday, and Trestman said he was "encouraged" by the work that Cutler did. That said, Cutler was still limited. After being held out of practice throughout Week 13 practices, Cutler's return should give Bears fans hope that he can play Week 15 against the Cleveland Browns.

Cutler suffered the injury during the Bears' loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 10. In three games since with McCown as the full-time starter, the Bears have gone 1-2. Over that stretch, McCown has played well, however. He went 78-for-114 passing for 923 yards, five touchdowns and one interception against the Baltimore Ravens, St. Louis Rams and Minnesota Vikings.

Trestman has reiterated that Cutler will be the Bears’ starter when healthy, despite McCown’s best efforts. The Bears may need Cutler to return soon if they hope to make the playoffs. At 6-6 overall, they are hoping to scrape out a playoff spot. They are effectively two games behind the 7-5 Detroit Lions for the division lead having lost both meetings against Detroit this season.
