Browns vs. Chiefs 2013: Kansas City remain undefeated, Browns fail to keep up

SB Nation’s writers are voicing their opinions on the Chiefs’ win over the Browns.

Kansas City remains the class of the NFL after defeating the Browns in Week 8. The Chiefs jumped up to a double-digit lead at halftime and were able to close the game with their league-leading eighth win of the season. The combination of big plays and dominating defense allowed for the Chiefs to maintain a two score lead for most of the game, despite the two-touchdown performance of Browns quarterback Jason Campbell.

The Browns running game continues to struggle, despite the performance of the passing game. The lack of a run allowed for Cleveland to slide behind early and the Browns never really recovered. The Browns defense allowed for two touchdowns from Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith and failed to stop Jamaal Charles on the run in the 23-17 loss.

Matt Verderame of Arrowhead Pride believes the Chiefs defense did a good job, but did give away a few big plays against the Browns:

The defense was a mixed bag. While giving up 17 points is not bad, the unit gave up huge chunks at times. Wide receiver Josh Gordon was the major target as expected with four receptions and 123 yards with a touchdown. Jordan Cameron also had four grabs and 81 yards.

Ultimately, Kansas City found a way to get it done. The defense stiffened late, not allowing a point after the first drive of the second half. Justin Houston got the only sack of the game for the Chiefs, being held in check most of the game. Derrick Johnson had the best game of his season, totaling 12 tackles including two tackles for loss.

Chris Pokorny of Dawgs By Nature believes wide receiver Davone Bess was a major negative in Sunday’s loss:

[Bess] muffed the short punt at the 45 yard line, inside of Chiefs territory, and Kansas City recovered. Ugh. With seven minutes to play in the game, things were starting to look gloomy. The Browns forced another punt, though, and got the ball back with four minutes to play and no timeouts.

Facing a 4th-and-7 from their own 31-yard line with two minutes to go in the game, Campbell rolled out to his right and didn’t see anybody open. He looked across the grain and fired the ball. Entering the picture, trying to make a sliding catch, was Bess. He would have had just enough for a first down, but he dropped it. Deflating. Not including the muff, it was his 2-3 dropped pass of the game.

In Week 9, the Browns will host the Ravens while the Chiefs will travel to Buffalo to face the Bills.
