Calvin Johnson becomes 2nd all-time leading receiver through 100 games

Megatron has had one of the greatest stretches in NFL history since the start of 2011, and that helped him reach another milestone on Sunday.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson has racked up an incredible amount of yardage over the last two seasons, and thanks to his recent burst of production, Johnson passed Randy Moss for the second-most receiving yards ever through a player's first 100 career games. Johnson came into Week 10 just 24 yards shy of Moss's mark and easily got there, currently giving him 8,689 career yards.

He is still well shy of Hall of Famer Lance Alworth, who had 9,019 yards through his first 100 career games with the San Diego Chargers.

Johnson may have not surpassed Moss through 100 games had it not been for his historic Week 8 performance against the Dallas Cowboys. In a 31-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys, Johnson had 14 catches for 329 yards, the second-most receiving yards ever in a single game. Johnson is leading the NFL in yards per game for the third straight season and dating back to the start of 2011, he has 4,466 yards in his last 39 regular season games. That includes an NFL-record 1,964 yards last season but does not include a 211-yard performance against the Saints in the 2011 playoffs.

Because Alworth played mostly in the 1960s, when the season was only 14 games long, he was two years older than Johnson when he played in his 100th career game. Alworth reached the mark in 1970, when he was 30, and he retired just two years later. Johnson likely has a lot more career left to go.

With 29 yards on Sunday, Johnson surpassed Cliff Branch for 67th all-time in receiving yards. By comparison to perhaps the greatest receiver in history, Jerry Rice had 8,488 yards through 100 games and finished with 22,895 yards in 303 career games. Whether or not Johnson can get there remains to be seen, but he’s had a great start.
