Ed Reed will ‘definitely’ play Sunday for Jets, per Rex Ryan

The nine-time Pro Bowler and eight-time All-Prowill make his Jets debut Sunday, just three days after being signed and five days after being released by the Texans.

Ed Reed will "definitely" make his New York Jets debut Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, head coach Rex Ryan told reporters Friday. The Jets signed Reed on Thursday after he was placed on waivers by the Houston Texans. Once the ink on Reed's signature was dry, Ryan clarified that the veteran safety is not expected to start.

Whether Reed will be an effective contributor to the Jets remains to be seen. He was considered a big free-agent acquisition for the Texans during the offseason, but saw his role gradually diminish over the weeks. Recently, he was replaced in the starting lineup by Shiloh Keo, a third-year player out of Idaho.

The Jets do need help in the secondary. While the run defense is arguably the NFL’s best, the pass defense ranks 22nd in the league giving up 251 yards per game. Reed is known as one of the NFL’s all-time great ball hawks, and the Jets are no doubt hoping he can spark a defense that has forced a league-low seven turnovers this season.

Unfortunately, Reed's brief stint with the Texans suggests he is a much different player than the one who built a Hall of Fame career with the Baltimore Ravens. The signing was not met with overwhelming excitement at Jets blog Gang Green Nation, but at least the move won't hurt if it fails:

Although most believe that Reed is washed up and pretty much useless at this point, my feeling is that if there is anyone capable of getting something out of him, it’s Rex Ryan. If he is unable to do so, then the team can release Reed with little impact.
