E.J. Manuel won the battle of the rookie QBs in Buffalo on Sunday, as the Bills dominated the Jets, who went to Matt Simms late in the second half.
Geno remains Jets starter despite struggles

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY SportsAccording to ESPN, Smith has registered a 10.6 QBR (quarterback rating) since Week 6 with one touchdown and eight interceptions, the lowest of anybody in that span. While Ryan maintains Smith will keep his job, Gang Green Nation relays a report that the coach will have Simms taking more first-team reps this week in practice.

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY SportsSmith threw three interceptions and fumbled the ball once, posting a passer rating of 10.1. The turnovers were bad enough, but he showed an inability to throw against a flawed Buffalo secondary, completing 35 percent of his passes. However, it wasn’t entirely the rookie quarterback’s fault, with the Jets’ pass protection being woeful and allowing him to be sacked four times.
It remains to be seen whether the Jets make a switch on a more permanent basis. The team is pushing for a wild card spot, and Smith remains a major liability with 16 interceptions and eight touchdowns this season.

Danny Wild-USA TODAY SportsThey brought out a big ol’ American flag for that national anthem before Jets-Bills in Buffalo. It’s super windy up there today, and some combination of gusts and flag handler miscommunication rent the stars and stripes in two:
Well, that or this was a subtle pro-secession message. Either way: not a good look.

Tom SzczerbowskiFirst-year head coach Doug Marrone has struggled on offense this season as the Bills rank 24th in points scored and 29th in passing yards. This will be compounded on Sunday without the two receivers. Buffalo has thrown for 1,922 yards this season, while Johnson and Woods represent almost half of the team’s total yards though the air.
The Bills are looking to get past the 2013 season in hopes of rebuilding their offense next year. Sunday’s game will be determined by how well Buffalo can run the ball against a stout Jets defensive line.

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY SportsRunning game a key for Jets vs. Bills

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY SportThe Bills, meanwhile, are in the division’s cellar at 3-7 and are coming off three consecutive losses, including last week’s 23-10 defeat to Pittsburgh.
The Jets are limiting opponents to a league-best 73.8 yards per game and have dominated the line of scrimmage so far in 2013. While the defensive front gave up 120 rushing yards during a 27-20 win over the Bills in Week 3, 40 of those were to a quarterback. They dominated Spiller, who rushed 10 times for an average of 0.9 yards per carry.

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY SportsThe Jets do need help in the secondary. While the run defense is arguably the NFL’s best, the pass defense ranks 22nd in the league giving up 251 yards per game. Reed is known as one of the NFL’s all-time great ball hawks, and the Jets are no doubt hoping he can spark a defense that has forced a league-low seven turnovers this season.

Ron AntonelliWhat sort of trends are going to be most important when betting this matchup, now an even line by most sports books?
The Jets are coming off of a bye week and are 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 games following a bye. Conversely, the Bills are 1-5-1 over their last seven games headed into a bye week and Buffalo doesn’t play in Week 12. Not only that, but New York is 7-1 straight up and 6-2 against the spread in their last eight meetings with Buffalo.
