In theory, the Eagles offense was going to be built around the dual-threat nature of the read option and the running ability of quarterback Michael Vick. Yet with Vick injured, the Eagles offense has taken a bit of a different approach with a quarterback who ran just a 5.2 40-yard dash at the scouting combine.
“The thing with Nick is, he may not be fleet of foot, but he’s fleet of mind,” Kelly said. “He’s a really, really good decision maker. Part of being a guy that can distribute the football [is] throwing the ball. Being a good decision maker is the same exact situation in the run game. You have to be a good decision maker to know when to give it and to know when to pull it.”
Aside from a a horrendous performance at home against the Cowboys on Oct. 20, Foles has been more than just effective for the Eagles. Foles has 16 touchdowns and no interceptions in six games on the season, and has been nearly unstoppable the past two weeks in wins over the Raiders and Packers. Foles, who says that he's worked hard to get faster on the field when needed, is proving that making the right decisions is more important that pure athletic ability.
The Eagles, chasing the Dallas Cowboys for the top spot in the NFC East, face the Redskins on Sunday with kickoff set for 1 p.m. ET.
