NFL Referees Association will challenge Roy Ellison’s suspension

The NFLRA denounced a one-game suspension for Roy Ellison and announced that an immediate grievance will be filed.

The NFL Referees Association denounced the one-game suspension announced by the league for umpire Roy Ellison as an unfair penalty that creates a double standard for on-field conduct. In a statement released on Friday, the NFLRA said that an immediate grievance against the league will be filed on behalf of Ellison:

Roy Ellison is an accomplished 11 year veteran who is highly respected. The NFL imposed its judgment upon him without consideration of all the facts. The decision was arbitrary and unjustified and will be challenged with an immediate grievance.

While nowhere in the statement are the actions of Ellison denied, the NFLRA criticized the league for a double standard that has created a “culture where players, coaches and teams can use racial slurs and profanity toward each other and at officials.”

In the statement, Redskins offensive tackle Trent Williams is accused of saying "F___ you, N-word" to Ellison, which elicited the reaction that resulted in the suspension of the veteran official. That report was corroborated by former Redskins offensive lineman John Wooten, although Williams denies the claim.

The NFL announced a one-game suspension without pay for Ellison on Friday, citing a “profane and derogatory statement” as the cause.
