Chiefs vs. Bills 2013 results: Defense powers Kansas City past Buffalo, 23-13

The Kansas City Chiefs used yet another strong defensive effort to hold off the Buffalo Bills in a 23-13 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Getting the start in place of Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel put the Bills up early, throwing a 59-yard touchdown to Marquise Goodwin to give Buffalo a 7-0 lead. Things went downhill for Tuel from there. He made his first big mistake in the second quarter with an ugly interception. Alex Smith drove the Chiefs down to the red zone, but they were unable to cash in on Tuel's turnover, settling for a field goal. The Bills' defense shut down the Chiefs in the first half, holding Smith to just 92 passing yards on 22 attempts. Buffalo went into halftime leading, 10-3.

The Bills almost added to the lead after C.J. Spiller's 61-yard run put them in the red zone, but things turned disastrous. Tuel threw a 99-yard pick-six to Sean Smith and the Chiefs tied things up. After the two teams traded field goals, Kansas City took the lead with another defensive touchdown. Tamba Hali took a fumble from T.J. Graham and returned it 11 yards to put the Chiefs up, 20-13. Kansas City's defense held down the stretch and the Chiefs got another field goal to put things away.

Kansas City now gets a bye week before a huge AFC West tilt with the Denver Broncos. The Bills caught them napping early, but their defense remained in top form and scored two touchdowns to give the Chiefs a win.

C.J. Spiller played through his ankle injury and gutted out a solid performance despite limited playing time, racking up 112 yards on 16 carries. Jamaal Charles had another solid performance, recording 90 yards on 17 carries.

Spiller, still nursing an ankle injury, came up limping after a big run, but stayed in the game. Robert Woods left with a leg injury and was questionable to return.

The Chiefs were favored by 4.5 points, according to Oddsshark. They had no problem covering that spread.
