Jason Campbell injury: Browns QB cleared to practice, game status undetermined

The concussed Cambell is back on the practice field, but must pass further testing in order to start Sunday against the Patriots.

Jason Campbell has hurdled one obstacle in playing this weekend, but still faces another. The ailing Cleveland Browns quarterback has been cleared by doctors to return to practice on Wednesday but must still be cleared to play against the New England Patriots this Sunday, according to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.

Campbell has not played since suffering a concussion against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 12. NFL concussion protocol dictates he must be cleared by an independent doctor before returning to live action.

Brandon Weeden, who was forced back into the starting role after Campbell went down, is concussed himself following the Browns' loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. He has not yet been cleared to return to practice.

With the very real possibility of both of their top quarterbacks being sidelined on Sunday, Cleveland is scrambling to find a replacement. They plucked Alex Tanney from the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad on Nov. 26 and signed Caleb Hanie off the street on Tuesday. The pair is desperately cramming in case one of them has to start against the Pats.

“One week, you’re sitting at home eating Thanksgiving [dinner] with your family. The next week, you could be playing for the Browns,” Hanie told the Beacon Journal. “It’s pretty crazy. I just try to take it in stride and just prepare the best I can.”
