Jason Campbell named Browns’ Week 14 starter

Jason Campbell will start for the Browns against the Patriots after returning to practice this week off a concussion.

Jason Campbell has been named the Cleveland Browns' Week 14 starting quarterback against the New England Patriots, Mark Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Campbell was cleared to practice earlier this week after sitting due to a concussion suffered in Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last week's starter, Brandon Weeden, has yet to be cleared to practice after suffering a concussion of his own in Week 13.

Campbell has a 1-3 record as the Browns’ full-time starter. That said, he has played reasonably well this season considering he came off the bench as a backup. Through five appearances, he has completed 56.9 percent of his passes at 6.1 yards per attempt, with six touchdown passes to three interceptions.

Head coach Rob Chudzinski was reportedly impressed with Campbell in practice, according to Cabot, saying that Campbell “looks sharp and hasn’t missed a beat.” We’ll see whether Chudzinski’s words were merely coachspeak when the Browns kick off against the 9-3 Patriots at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.

The Browns are 4-8 this season and, barring an improbable run, will likely miss the playoffs for an 11th straight year. Cleveland began the season 3-2, but has since collapsed perhaps in large part due to a season-ending injury to upstart quarterback Brian Hoyer.
