Jeff Ireland has secure job as Dolphins GM, per report

Miami is playing for a playoff spot, which apparently is enough for Ireland to keep his job.

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland has been rumored to be on the hot seat for a majority of this season, but maybe the seat is beginning to cool.

Since the Dolphins have won three of their last four, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that owner Stephen Ross has assured Ireland his job is safe. Miami is currently tied for the sixth and final AFC playoff seed, although they lose the tiebreaker to the Baltimore Ravens.

Ireland has overseen the team as general manager since 2008 when Chad Pennington and Tony Sparano took the Dolphins to an improbable 11-5 record and AFC East crown following a 1-15 mark. However, Miami has not been back to the postseason since.

This year was supposed to be the season the Dolphins returned, after Ireland went out and spent lavishly on a host of free agents. Most notable was wide receiver Mike Wallace, along with linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, tight end Dustin Keller and cornerback Brent Grimes.

Everything appeared on track in the beginning of the season with Miami 3-0, but then the wheels began to come off. The Dolphins eventually found themselves not only with a 4-5 record, but with offensive tackle Jonathan Martin leaving the team and accusing guard Richie Incognito of bullying him.

The team suspended Incognito indefinitely and reached out to Martin before finally placing him on the non-football illness list, ending his season. Incognito remains suspended.

Despite all of its issues, Miami is in good position to end its run of seasons without a playoff appearance. The Dolphins remaining games are against the Buffalo Bills on the road, and the New England Patriots and New York Jets at home.
