Tim Walton to be hired as Rams DC, according to report

The St. Louis Rams are set to hire Tim Walton as their new defensive coordinator, according to reports.

USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Rams are set to hire Tim Walton to be their next defensive coordinator, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Twitter.

Walton’s interview with the Rams was first reported on Monday, so it must have gone well if the team pulled the trigger on Tuesday night.

Other candidates interviewed for the position included Minnesota Vikings linebackers coach and former San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary and former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron. The Rams were reportedly close to hiring former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan early on in the interview process, but both sides backed off recently.

Walton has been the defensive backs coach of the Detroit Lions for all four years of head coach Jim Schwartz's tenure. He served as the defensive coordinator with the University of Memphis in 2008.

Detroit’s defense in 2012 was very middle of the pack. Specifically, the pass defense played pretty well, allowing 223.1 opposing passing yards per game. Those numbers are actually quite good, given the perceived lack of secondary talent in Detroit over the past few seasons.
