RGIII injury: Redskins believe QB has ‘legitimate chance’ to start Week 1

Although it has been just more than a month since his surgery, Redskins officials are optimistic RGIII will be ready to start in the 2013 season opener.

Just over a month ago, Robert Griffin III was writhing in pain on the ground at FedEx Field with a torn ACL and LCL. Now, Redskins officials are so encouraged with his recovery that they say he has a "legitimate chance" to line up as the starting quarterback for the 2013 season opener, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

While RGIII still has a long way to go before he is near ready, he has been rehabbing aggressively since undergoing surgery. Despite how early it is in the process, the Redskins are pleased with the progress they’ve seen from RGIII, who recently returned to Washington to continue his rehab.

Griffin is no stranger to returning from knee injuries. He tore his ACL in 2009 as a college sophomore, but returned to Baylor in 2010 to throw for 3,501 yards and 22 touchdowns as well as run for 635 yards and eight touchdowns. RGIII sprained his LCL in his rookie season with the Redskins and was forced to miss one game before returning to the field. Upon his return, he led the Redskins to the playoffs, but didn’t seem to have the explosive speed he had shown earlier in the season.

He then tore his ACL and LCL during the Redskins' playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
