Robert Griffin III will start Redskins season opener

After months of speculation, it’s now official that the Redskins quarterback will be ready after all.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will start his team's season-opening game, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. That means Griffin's first on-field action since last season will take place Sept. 9, on Monday Night Football, against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Griffin had surgery in January to repair a torn ACL, keeping him out of action for the entire preseason. He worked in his first 11-on-11 drills on Aug. 14, he’s sharp in practice and has seemingly been on track for a Week 1 debut for quite awhile. Griffin said Tuesday that he felt “not below 100 percent,” which Schefter’s report seems to confirm.

Griffin was the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year last season, leading Washington to a playoff berth with 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns passing to go with 815 yards and seven scores on the ground. He threw just five interceptions in 393 attempts.

According to Ian Rappaport of NFL.com, Dr. James Andrews has still yet to clear Griffin to play but is expected to do so Thursday.

Kirk Cousins, Pat White and Rex Grossman have each played in preseason games for the Redskins while RGIII was out. Cousins likely would have started Week 1 if Griffin weren't ready.
