Robert Griffin III injury: Redskins refute report QB should not play before Week 6

Dr. James Andrews reportedly told the Redskins to not play RG3 until after their bye week. The Redskins are denying it.

The Washington Redskins refuted a report Saturday that said Robert Griffin III’s doctor recommended the quarterback not play before the sixth week of the season.

The report came from Philadelphia-area television and radio reporter Howard Eskin, citing anonymous sources who told him Dr. James Andrews, Griffin’s doctor, recommended he not play before the team’s bye week. That is Week 5 for the Redskins.

However, Eskin reports, the Redskins plan to ignore Andrews’ advice and start Griffin Week 1 anyway.

The Redskins quickly refuted the report on Saturday afternoon, saying it was “not true,” per Tarik El-Bashir of CSN Washington.

Whether the report is true or not, the constant speculation has to be wearing on Griffin, the coaching staff and the players trying to get ready for the regular season. Head coach Mike Shanahan has been at odds with his star quarterback throughout the preseason, bringing him along slowly in practices and not allowing him to play in games. His health is obviously vital to Washington returning to the playoffs in 2014.

The Redskins open their season Sept. 9 against the Eagles on Monday Night Football.
