Robert Griffin III injury: Redskins QB cleared to play

Griffin is on pace to start Week 1 for Washington.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III sent out a tweet Thursday night indicating that he has been cleared to return to the field:

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan confirmed after Washington’s final preseason game that he spoke with Dr. James Andrews and Griffin has been cleared to play, but Shanahan still has some concerns and has not officially named Griffin the starting quarterback.

Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that Griffin would start Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, which Griffin's tweet appears to confirm. The quarterback has been adamant that he will be ready for Monday Night Football on Sept. 9, and said that he feels "100 percent" on his injured knee.

Griffin won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award last season, leading the Redskins to a playoff berth with 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns passing, adding an additional 815 yards and seven scores on the ground.

Washington played their final preseason game Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning 30-12.
