Alfonzo Dennard found guilty of assaulting police officer

The rookie cornerback faces up to six years in prison.

New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was found guilty of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest on Wednesday, according to CSN New England's Tom E. Curran.

Dennard, 23, faces up to six years in prison, according to Lori Pilger of the Lincoln Journal Star. His sentencing will be on April 11. The trial started on Feb. 11.

Dennard was found guilty of punching a police officer -- a felony offense -- outside of a bar last April. The rookie cornerback out of Nebraska denied punching the officer, but admitted to resisting arrest.

Dennard emerged as one of the Patriots' best cornerbacks last season. He played in 10 games, but started six late in the season as the No. 2 cornerback next to Aqib Talib. Dennard was a starter in both of the Patriots' playoff games.

The Patriots drafted Dennard in the seventh round, but he was originally considered a second-round draft pick. His arrest just days before the April 2012 NFL Draft dropped his stock considerably.
