A Lincoln, Neb., judge sentenced New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard to 30 days in jail and probation following felony assault and resisting arrest convictions leveled as a result of a fight that occurred in late April 2012.

Dennard’s jail sentence begins on March 1, 2014, the Boston Globe’s Shalise Manza Young reports. He received 12 months of probation for each charge, totaling two years. He is also required to complete 100 hours of community service.
Dennard, who played college ball at the University of Nebraska, got into a scrape with a college student in Lincoln on the morning of April 21, 2012. When a police officer saw the incident and got involved, Dennard was charged with striking the officer and resisting the resulting arrest. He was found guilty of both on Feb. 20.
Per the terms of his sentence, Dennard can travel to and from Massachusetts and Nebraska and for work purposes with the Patriots. Any other travel will need permission. As The Globe’s Greg A. Bedard notes, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell can’t suspend Dennard for the incident because it occurred prior to him being taken in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Lori Pilger of the Lincoln Journal Star reports that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Huskers coach Bo Pelini wrote letters in Dennard’s defense, and that the presiding judge might consider motions that could alter the terms of his probation or delay jail time at a later date.
