NFL trade rumors: 49ers pursuing Darrelle Revis, according to report

According to sources, the San Francisco 49ers are in pursuit of All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis.

According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, the San Francisco 49ers are poised to make a run at cornerback Darrelle Revis this offseason.

The 49ers just approved a trade to send Alex Smith to Kansas City for a second-rounder (34th overall) this year and a conditional third-rounder in 2014. With 15 draft picks this season, the Niners have unlimited options. They are perhaps the one team that could effectively complete a deal for the Jets' All-Pro cornerback.

Revis is going to demand a substantial salary increase, looking for top-tier dollar comparable to the deal Mario Williams received from Buffalo ($16 million per year).

The catch is that Revis is coming off a season-ending ACL injury and who knows what shape he'll be in. While Adrian Peterson was able to return in remarkable fashion, the dreaded ACL injury has claimed careers before. If the Niners make a move for Revis, they risk getting a shell of the former No. 24.

However, in Cole's article, his sources mention that the 49ers may be willing to pursue this trade, even if it is for just one year. This may remind the fan base of San Francisco's move in 1994 when they signed cornerback Deion Sanders. The Niners won a Super Bowl that year and Sanders left for Dallas shortly after.

It is worth mentioning that Sanders won a Super Bowl in 1995 as well.

This shows that the mercenary cornerback can be an effective offseason move. Whether or not the 49ers can financially wrangle such a deal is another thing. It will be up to their chief contract negotiator Paraag Marathe and general manager Trent Baalke to lock a deal down.

But if any front office can pull this off, it’s the one in the Bay Area.
