Super Bowl 2013: Explaining John Harbaugh’s blackout outburst

During the blackout after halftime of Super Bowl XLVII, John Harbaugh threw something of a tantrum. Apparently, Harbaugh was upset about the possibility of having to play without headsets.

During Super Bowl XLVII, a blackout happened in the stadium, and play was postponed for a significant amount of time. When power was restored, the San Francisco 49ers had a new life, though it was immediately after halftime, so it's unclear if the blackout or halftime adjustments were more of a factor.

Still, one of the interesting happenings during the blackout was that Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was flipping out. He was angry, and looked more like his brother, Jim Harbaugh, with the way he was going about things. It was unclear what was driving him mad, until a Tweet from Rachel Nichols cleared things up on Monday.

Nichols said that the NFL had initially ordered the Ravens to turn their headsets off to get play to resume, as power had not yet been restored to headsets on the 49ers’ side. Harbauh’s outburst reportedly stemmed from the fact that the Ravens’ coordinators coach from the upstairs box, and communication without the headsets would have been impossible.

According to Nichols, the NFL was prepared to extend the delay another 15 minutes to bring the coordinators down to the field, but at that point, power was restored to the headsets on both sides. John Harbaugh later said that he might have overreacted.
