Rams will release Quintin Mikell on Monday, according to report

Quintin Mikell will reportedly be released a day before free agency officially begins, creating another need for the Rams going forward into 2013.

The St. Louis Rams will reportedly release veteran safety Quintin Mikell on Monday, according to Adam Schefter. Mikell has started all 16 games for the Rams in each of the last two seasons, providing another reliable starter to add to the free agent market set to officially open Tuesday afternoon.

St. Louis entered the offseason in desperate need of signing a free safety. Craig Dahl is a subpar talent, and the team is not expected to re-sign him. Now the Rams will be searching for a new tandem of starting safeties for 2013.

Mikell will be 33 in September. He played eight seasons with the Eagles after going undrafted in 2003. His large cap hit and age led to his release, but there will still be plenty of teams interested in his services.

Pro Football Focus rated Mikell as the No. 5 overall safety in 2012. He recorded 101 tackles, three sacks and four forced fumbles. Mikell joins a relatively deep group of safeties in free agency.
