The Denver Broncos are looking to add a running back to the depth chart this offseason, and according to Dan Hanzus of Around The League, Rashard Mendenhall could be just the player they’re looking for. Mendenhall would provide a younger, physical runner to the Broncos backfield, exactly what the team is looking for.
Rashard Mendenhall rumors: Broncos interested in former Steelers back
The Broncos are in the market for a new running back. Is Rashard Mendenhall the answer in Denver?
Willis McGahee is recovering from another major leg injury on the wrong side of 30. He’s signed for 2013, but the Broncos aren’t sure how effective he’ll be at this point. Knowshon Moreno, Ronnie Hillman and Lance Ball are all under contract as well. It would not be surprising to see one of these names released, though, as Denver searches for a new running back.
The Steelers are not expected to re-sign Mendenhall after his disappointing campaign last season. Mendenhall suffered a torn ACL at the end of 2011, and didn’t return to his pre-injury form in his return from surgery. Poor performance and ball control issues ultimately led to his benching.
Mendenhall is only 25 years old, though. He eclipsed 1,000 yards in two of his first four seasons in the NFL. If he can prove he’s back to 100 percent, he could be a steal for his new suitor. The Broncos signing Mendenhall would basically spell the demise of McGahee’s career.
