49ers rumors: Sean Smith garners interest ‘at the right price’

The 49ers might want to add the tall Smith to help against bigger receivers.

If the "price is right," the San Francisco 49ers could go after soon-to-be free agent cornerback Sean Smith, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

Maiocco writes that the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also interested in Smith, who spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins.

Smith, 25, is considered to be one of the top free agent cornerbacks available this offseason. Smith would help sure up the 49ers' secondary, which faces questions with safety Dashon Goldson also set to hit the market.

David Fucillo of Niners Nation says the Niners will have to cut someone if they do sign Smith:

If the 49ers did sign Smith, he would be the biggest corner on the roster at 6'3 214 pounds. While there is value to that, the 49ers would have to unload somebody to make this work. My guess is Carlos Rogers would get the axe as he has the most salary cap implications at this point.

Smith has been durable over his four NFL seasons, missing just one game. He was a second round pick by the Dolphins in the 2009 NFL Draft. Smith played three seasons at Utah.

The last two seasons have been strong for Smith. In 2011 he recorded 61 total tackles and two interceptions. He was arguably a bit better in 2012, picking up 59 total tackles, two interceptions, 12 pass deflections and three forced fumbles.
