RGIII injury update: Redskins quarterback ‘ahead of schedule’ in rehab

Robert Griffin III is “ahead of schedule” in his rehab from a serious knee injury, according to Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the quarterback will be ready for the start of the 2013 season.

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan stopped short of saying that Robert Griffin III would be ready to start the 2013 regular season after undergoing knee surgery this offseason. Shanahan did say that Griffin is "ahead of schedule" in his rehab, however.

“Robert is doing well,” Shanahan said during a news conference at Redskins Park. “He’s getting some great work in here, working out a couple times a day, about six hours a day, seven hours. He is ahead of schedule according to Larry [Hess, the team’s head athletic trainer]. That means the muscles are stronger than they anticipated and he is doing everything he can to be ready for this season.”

Shanahan said he has "no idea" whether Griffin will be ready to start the season, but added that "if work has anything to do with it, he probably will." Griffin is coming off a torn ACL and LCL suffered during the Redskins' Wild Card loss to the Seattle Seahawks in January.

Griffin will continue to be perhaps the most closely monitored injury rehabilitation process during the NFL offseason. He accounted for 4,015 total yards and 27 touchdowns last season to earn NFL Rookie of the Year honors.
