Sam Shields receives 2nd round tender from Packers

It will require a second round pick to wrestle the former-undrafted free agent from the Packers.

The Green Bay Packers made the first step towards ensuring the team's secondary doesn't look too different in 2013, despite the loss of Charles Woodson, as the team applied a second-round tender to defensive back Sam Shields on Tuesday, according to Pro Football Talk.

Shields, 25, was an undrafted free agent in 2010 and immediately found the field as a rookie, starting six games in 2010. He has since started in 15 games as the primary backup for Woodson and Tramon Williams, while also contributing as a nickel cornerback.

The tender doesn’t necessarily mean that Shields will remain with the Packers though, as teams now have the option to sign the cornerback with the stipulation that they send the Packers a second round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft in return. Barring a long-term contract negotiated between the two sides, the tender is projected to pay Shields a little more than $2 million for the 2013 season, making him a free agent again in the 2014 offseason.

Shields has recorded nine career interceptions, one sack and 84 tackles for the Packers.
