Chase Daniel rumors: Chiefs, Buccaneers interested in quarterback

Chase Daniel will take advantage of a down year for free agent quarterbacks in the NFL, with plenty of teams, including the Buccaneers and the Chiefs, looking for a quality backup.

Chase Daniel stands to make over $3 million per season as a free agent this offseason, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, after making $1 million to be Drew Brees' backup in New Orleans last season. The Kansas City Chiefs have been mentioned often as potential landing spot for Daniel, but according to Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also very interested in the fourth-year quarterback as a backup to Josh Freeman.

The Chiefs have a clear need for a backup quarterback with Alex Smith now in tow. The team isn't expected to retain Brady Quinn or Matt Cassel, which makes some sense given their immense struggles last season. Daniel has thrown just nine passes in his NFL career, completing seven for 55 yards and zero touchdowns to zero interceptions.

The Bucs, meanwhile, appear to be looking for a better No. 2 quarterback than Dan Orlovsky, according to Holder. Tampa Bay has also reportedly been in contact with Drew Stanton, suggesting that the team is looking for some more mobility at the position.

According to La Canfora, the New York Giants, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings could also be interested in Daniel as a backup. Daniel by all appearances should be a solid insurance option going forward. Though he most likely would like an opportunity to start, he should benefit from a down year for free agent quarterbacks in the NFL.
