Dashon Goldson visting Buccaneers, according to report

The Pro Bowl safety has hit free agency and Tampa Bay is looking to make a splash again this year.

The Buccaneers were one of the most active players on the free-agent market last year, signing wide receiver Vincent Jackson, guard Carl Nicks, and cornerback Eric Wright. However, they only ended up improving to 7-9 and lost five of their last six games. It does not appear they are going to rest on their laurels or waste their significant cap room though.

For that reason, it would make sense that 2011 and 2012 Pro Bowl free safety Dashon Goldson appears set to visit the Bucs, according to a report for Adam Schefter. The Bucs gave up the most passing yards in the league last season and are looking for a free safety to pair with exciting 2012 first-round pick Mark Barron. Goldson would fit that bill.

Selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 2007 draft, Goldson spent his first two years mostly on the sidelines, but 2009 was the full-time starter at free safety. When Jim Harbaugh took over the Niners in 2011 though, Goldson really took off and has recorded nine interceptions total in the last two seasons with two trips to the Pro Bowl.

He was also named to the first team All-Pro team by the Associated Press.

The 49ers probably do not want to lose Goldson, but they might not have much choice. San Francisco is dangerously close to having no cap room left, while OvertheCap.com reports that the Bucs could be as much as $32 million under that ceiling. That should be enough for a Goldson and then some, despite Tampa’s free spending last year.

The Bucs still have money and they aren’t afraid to use it.
