Chiefs sign Anthony Fasano, per report

Kansas City continues their efforts to improve the league’s worst scoring offense from a year ago. How much can the veteran tight end help?

No team in the NFL scored fewer points last season than the Kansas City Chiefs. That probably helps explain the 2-14 record a little bit. So it is the job of new pairing of head coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey to turn that around, and to turn it around quickly. They have thus far traded for quarterback Alex Smith, re-signed receiver Dwayne Bowe, and given the franchise tag to tackle Branden Albert.

Next up? According to a report, they have now signed free-agent tight end Anthony Fasano away from the Miami Dolphins.

Fasano is a bit of a low-key signing, having totaled 2,373 yards over a seven-year career, but should provide Smith with a viable option opposite of current tight end Tony Moeaki, and also help out with the Chiefs blocking ability. Kansas City had an NFL-low eight touchdown passes in 2012, while throwing 20 interceptions. Fasano caught 41 passes for 332 yards and five touchdowns for Miami last year. His 8.1 yards per catch was a career-low, but his 41 receptions were a career-high.

Originally selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2006 draft out of Notre Dame, Fasano has spent the last five years with the Dolphins. He caught seven touchdowns in 2008 as Miami ran the Wildcat offense, but for Reid, he's probably just looking for a guy that can catch any footballs at all.

Once more, the Chiefs didn’t see much of that last year.
