Reggie Bush rumors: Lions offer full-time running back job

Bush surprised many with his ability to be productive in Miami without much of a supporting cast.

If former-Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush lands with the Detroit Lions, it would come with the understanding that he would be the team's full-time starting running back, according to a report from Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports. The promise of a full-time load in Detroit has made the Lions the front runner to acquire Bush's talents.

Bush, 28, is often characterized as a let-down or bust after never quite achieving the success that many expected of him after a dominant collegiate career. After he was selected with the second pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, Bush was used in a variety of ways, but progressively received fewer touches each season until he left New Orleans to join the Miami Dolphins as a full-time back.

While the Dolphins finished with losing records in each of Bush’s two seasons with the team, he surprised many with his production, finishing with 5.0 and 4.3 yards per carry in two seasons with over 200 carries each. Among those surprised were coaches, as one told Cole he was impressed with Bush’s performance with the Dolphins:

“I don’t think you have to redraw your entire defense, but you have to be aware of where he is and you have to have a plan,” an NFC defensive coordinator said last month. “I was surprised to see how well he handled all the carries he got in Miami, especially without a lot of talent around him.”

In the Lions offense, Bush would be far from the only talent on the roster as the pass-happy team finished with the third-most yards gained in the NFL. However, none of the team's running backs eclipsed 800 yards rushing and incumbent starter Mikel Leshoure definitely doesn't add the pass-catching talent and threat out of the backfield that Bush does.

Among the other teams that are considered to be interested in Bush are the Arizona Cardinals, Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals.
