NFL free agency: Redskins interested in cornerback Antoine Winfield

Washington could be trying to pick up a veteran corner in Antoine Winfield.

After Antoine Winfield was surprisingly cut from the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, it did not take long for other teams to express interest. The Washington Redskins are interested in the slot cornerback who was cut earlier this week for cap reasons, according to John Keim. Winfield would essentially replace DeAngelo Hall on the roster, whom the Redskins gave his walking papers on Tuesday.

For the first time in nearly a decade, Washington has legitimate expectations going into next season and could use a veteran presence like Winfield. The secondary is one of the few places the team really needs to improve, with the starters certainly in flux at the moment.

Winfield would stabilize the inside slot position, giving the Redskins one of the better slot corners in the game. The veteran would also be invaluable to men such as Josh Wilson and Cedric Griffin, who figure to have very prominent roles in the backfield for Washington.

Clearly, the Redskins could use a man like Winfield to fortify an important spot like the slot in a division where he would line up against Victor Cruz and Jeremy Maclin.

Winfield isn’t a long-term solution, but he makes the team better in 2013. The 36-year-old made 100 tackles last year, showcasing his willingness to also help out against the run, while nabbing three interceptions.

Last year, Washington ranked 30th in opponents passing yards per game, allowing 282. Signing Winfield can only help that ugly number.
