Dolphins check on cornerbacks Antoine Cason, Chris Houston

Four years after taking Vontae Davis and Sean Smith in the first and second rounds, the Dolphins need to replace both players.

The Miami Dolphins were possibly the most newsworthy team on Tuesday, handing out big contracts in free agency to wide receiver Mike Wallace and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, but they aren't quite done and have their eyes on a few cornerbacks. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins have "made inquiries" about Antoine Cason, Chris Houston and Captain Munnerlyn, as well as Greg Toler, before he was signed by the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday.

In the 2009 NFL Draft, the Dolphins seemingly fixed the cornerback position by selecting Vontae Davis and Sean Smith in the first two rounds, and it appeared to work as both played a prominent role in the Miami defense early in their careers.

However, Davis was traded to the Colts in 2012 and Smith is expected to leave in free agency, leaving the Dolphins relatively bare at the position, once again. Opposite Smith in 2012 were Nolan Carroll and Richard Marshall, among others, but none inspired much hope for the future.

Cason, 26, was a first round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft and has made 45 starts in the past three seasons for the San Diego Chargers. Houston, 28, made 41 starts for the Detroit Lions during the same span. Munnerlyn, 24, didn't take over as a starting cornerback for the Carolina Panthers until the 2011 season and made 25 starts in the past two seasons.
