Chris Houston, Lions agree on 5-year contract

Detroit is trying to upgrade its secondary, and keeping Houston would go a long way toward fortifying that unit.

The Detroit Lions and cornerback Chris Houston have come to terms on a five-year deal to keep him in Motown, according to Tim Twentyman. The details of the agreement are still unknown.

Houston was the best corner Detroit had last season, which isn’t saying a ton considering the disaster that the Lions were putting out there every week in the backfield. Team struggles aside, Houston was a solid performer who made 56 tackles and a pair of interceptions in 14 games last season.

Detroit needs ample help in the secondary, but Houston gives the Lions peace of mind at one corner. The one question mark with Houston is his durability. In six seasons, the 28-year-old has only played a full season twice, the first two years of his career.

Houston’s best campaign came in 2011 when the Lions went to the playoffs, totaling five interceptions, two touchdowns and 54 tackles.

With Houston now in the fold, Detroit will continue to look for defensive help in both free agency and the draft.
