NFL free agency rumors: Terence Newman reportedly visiting Raiders

Oakland has lost a bevy of players in free agency, but might add one with Newman in for a visit.

The Oakland Raiders are hosting free agent cornerback Terence Newman on Thursday, according to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Newman, a 10-year veteran who spent his first nine seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Cincinnati Bengals last year, would at least bring a solid player and some veteran leadership to a team in desperate need of both.

At 35 years old by the start of the 2013 campaign, Newman’s best days are certainly behind him, but he represents an upgrade to the Raiders secondary regardless. General manager Reggie McKenzie is trying to sign cost-effective players as he works out of the salary cap mess Oakland has been in for years, and Newman fits the bill.

Last year, Newman was productive, amassing 75 tackles and a pair of interceptions.

Oakland has been absolutely decimated so far in free agency, losing defensive tackle Desmond Bryant and inside linebacker Philip Wheeler to the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins. If the Raiders can sign Newman, it would be some positive news for a fan base that hasn't had much to cheer about over the last decade.
