Chiefs release Matt Cassel, according to report

The Chiefs officially turned the page on Thursday, releasing Matt Cassel.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released quarterback Matt Cassel, according to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star.

Cassel was the starting quarterback for four seasons in Kansas City after being acquired in 2009 for a second-round draft pick. Cassel made the Pro Bowl in 2010 after throwing 27 touchdowns against seven interceptions, but never replicated that success in his other seasons in Kansas City.

Last year, Cassel began as the starter but was unseated by Brady Quinn after having a brutal campaign. Cassel tossed 12 interceptions and fumbled six times in only nine games.

The low point of the season came against the Baltimore Ravens in Arrowhead Stadium, when a hit from nose tackle Haloti Ngata resulted in a concussion. With Cassel on the ground after the hit, a smattering of embarrassing applause rang out from the crowd.

Ultimately, Cassel’s poor play along with the team’s culminated in the firing of head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli, paving the way for a new Chiefs brain trust in head coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey.

Dorsey traded for ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, officially ringing in a new era in Kansas City football.
