NFL free agency rumors: Patriots hosting Dwight Freeney, according to report

New England is looking to bolster its pass rush with an ex-Colt. Will the Patriots add Dwight Freeney?

The Indianapolis Colts outside linebacker/defensive end Dwight Freeney is reportedly in Massachusetts on Friday to visit with the New England Patriots, according to CSN New England's Tom E. Curran.

Freeney, 33, would be a logical fit for Bill Belichick’s defense in New England, which loves to utilize a multitude of fronts. The former Syracuse standout would fit into that, as he can stand up and rush as a 3-4 outside linebacker but also put his hand in the ground and do what he does best -- attack the quarterback in a 4-3 scheme.

The Patriots could use some help getting to the passer, ranking 15th in the league last year with 37 sacks as a team.

Freeney, a Hartford, CT native, has spent his entire career with the Colts up to this point, but it appears those days have come to an end with head coach Chuck Pagano looking to develop a younger team and stick with a 3-4 scheme -- something Freeney isn’t as adept at playing.

Last season, Freeney had only 12 tackles and five sacks in limited time. In his career, Freeney has 107.5 sacks on his resume to couple with a Super Bowl ring he earned in 2006.
