Elvis Dumervil’s contract ‘out of whack,’ John Elway says

John Elway made no secret about his thoughts on Elvis Dumervil’s pay rate.

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway is not hiding his feelings about defensive end Elvis Dumervil's contract. Elway publicly ripped Dumervil's salary -- a deal signed under former head coach Josh McDaniels -- in a way that few GM's would ever do (via the Denver Post).

“It’s not all about dollars. But when it’s way out of whack? Then it’s so out of whack that you’ve got to say: That (salary) can’t be it. Especially when you look at the market and what’s out there now,” Elway told me. “It’s so far out of whack. Hopefully, he realizes that.”

The deadline is Friday for Dumervil to restructure his deal and take a hefty pay cut should he remain in orange and blue. If Dumervil decides to keep his current deal, Elway will be forced to cut him before any guaranteed money kicks in.

The statement clearly shows just how much Denver is looking to get out from under Dumervil's inflated salary at $12 million per year. With Peyton Manning eating up a huge chunk of the salary cap with his $25 million this season, the Broncos have to be prudent with whatever choices they make.

Losing Dumervil's production would be a significant hit to Denver's defense, which relies heavily on him and Von Miller to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Last season, Dumervil collected 11 sacks and 54 tackles. Denver tied for the league led in team sacks last season with 52.

Already, Denver has been active in free agency, signing wide receiver Wes Welker to a two-year/$12 million contract, inked guard Louis Vasquez to a four year deal and signed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to a one-year deal worth $5 million.
