Patriots sign Niko Koutouvides, per report

New England is adding to its depth with the signing of Koutouvides.

The New England Patriots have reached an agreement with linebacker Niko Koutouvides on a one-year deal, according to Ian Rapoport.

Koutouvides, a 31-year-old Connecticut native, has bounced around the league quite a bit since breaking in back in 2004 with the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent his first four seasons. Since then. Koutouvides has played for the Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Patriots, where he has been a member of New England on and off since 2011.

In his career, Koutouvides has only one sack and 164 tackles. Koutouvides is looked at as an experienced backup who can play special teams and provide leadership, even if he is not necessarily one of the league’s most talented players.

The Patriots are trying to bolster a defense that was the Achilles heel of the team last year, and ultimately its downfall in the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens.
