Antoine Winfield rumors: Vikings could re-sign cornerback

Minnesota could bring back Winfield at a reduced price, helping to fortify its secondary.

Despite releasing him earlier in the offseason, the Minnesota Vikings are hoping they can bring in cornerback Antoine Winfield, according to ESPN.com.

Head coach Leslie Frazier is supposedly talking to the star corner, and both have expressed a genuine interested in keeping Winfield in purple. The Vikings are very thin at the corner position and young in the secondary, making Winfield such a valuable player for a bevy of reasons.

Winfield is still one of the better slot corners in the league and can play the run very effectively, notching 100 tackles last year. Frazier says his dialogue with Winfield has been positive, according to ESPN.

“Him and I talked a few days ago, before I came up here, and I don’t want the door to be shut,” Frazier said. “So, we’re going to still try to get something worked out -- if he’s amicable to coming back.”

However, bringing Winfield back isn't going to be easy. The 35-year-old has drawn interest from some other teams including the Washington Redskins, an up-and-coming team that could use help in its defensive backfield.

Winfield was scheduled to make just over $7 million this season before he was cut, so Minnesota could sign other players and manage its cap.
