David Carr re-signs with New York Giants

Despite rumors that he was looking for an opportunity for playing time elsewhere, David Carr will return to play backup quarterback for the Giants next season.

David Carr will remain Eli Manning's backup with the New York Giants in 2013, according to Mike Garafolo of USA Today. The veteran quarterback re-signed with the team on Tuesday, though details of the new contract were not immediately available.

Carr was expected to move on from the Giants in search of a better opportunity to play on the free agent market. He either didn’t find that opportunity, or couldn’t strike the right deal, and now finds himself back in New York City. Carr has been with the Giants for three of the last four seasons. Over that span, he has gone just 37-for-61 passing for 426 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Carr may have some competition for the No. 2 gig, with the Giants also bringing in Curtis Painter on a futures/reserves contract in January. More than likely, however, Carr will remain directly behind Manning on the depth chart.

Carr was the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Houston Texans in the 2002 NFL Draft, but struggled under center as a starter before being released following the 2006 season.
