NFL free agent tracker: Brice McCain signs with Houston Texans

The Texans are keeping around cornerback Brice McCain for 2013. How is their secondary looking at this point in free agency?

The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with cornerback Brice McCain, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. McCain tweeted Tuesday evening his new contract is a three-year deal.

A sixth-round draft pick in 2009, McCain shaped up as a solid nickel corner over the past four seasons with the Texans. He recorded 24 total tackles, eight passes defended and one interception in 12 games last season.

With McCain back, Houston is only left with an empty safety spot on the secondary depth chart to fill. Jonathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson will continue starting at corner, leaving McCain to resume his duties covering slot receivers. The Texans finished 16th overall in pass defense in 2012. Joseph missed a couple games along with McCain, though, so the group wasn't entirely healthy the whole way.

Replacing Glover Quin is the last objective in this area of the defense. The Texans reportedly offered Ed Reed a three-year deal worth $4 million per year. Reed is looking for a deal somewhere in the $6 million to $7 million range, though, so his agent will continue searching for other suitors right now. He spent a few days in Houston last week, but the two sides never reached a deal.

If they can add Reed, the Texans secondary looks solid for 2013. A middle-of-the-road pass defense last season could improve with a hard-hitting veteran and a healthier campaign from the rest of the roster.
