San Francisco 49ers sign kicker Phil Dawson

Dawson earned a trip to the Pro Bowl for the first time in 2012 in his 14th season as a kicker for the Cleveland Browns.

Phil Dawson is a member of the San Francisco 49ers, as the team signed the long-time Cleveland Browns kicker to a one-year deal on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Dawson, 38, was an undrafted free agent in 1998 and bounced from the Oakland Raiders to the New England Patriots. In 1999 he earned a spot on the Browns roster and held that spot for the next 14 seasons, becoming the all-time leader in franchise history in field goals made and second all-time in points scored, behind Lou Groza.

In 2012, Dawson became a Pro Bowler for the first time after he knocked through 29-of-31 field goal attempts including a perfect 7-of-7 attempts from 50 yards or longer. His 93.5 field goal percentage was tops in the NFL among kickers that attempted at least 20 field goals.

Things didn't go as smoothly for the 49ers in the kicking game, as David Akers struggled throughout the season and finished with 29-of-42 field goal attempts made. The 69 percent efficiency was the worst in his career since taking over as a starting kicker in 2000.
