NFL free agent tracker: Randy Starks signs Dolphins franchise tender

Randy Starks made it official. He will be playing under a franchise tender in 2013. How much will his signing cost the Dolphins?

Randy Starks signed his franchise tender with the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter. The tender will cost the Dolphins $8.45 million against the salary cap for the 2013 season.

The 29-year-old defensive tackle made $3.72 million last season, so his new contract gives him a considerable raise. Miami currently has an estimated $19 million in cap space. While money isn’t tight at this point, the Dolphins can sign Starks to a long-term deal before July 15 to free up room financially.

Starks was given a franchise tag on March 4. Prior to signing the one-year tender, Starks made it clear he wants to spend the remainder of his career in South Beach. He’ll be looking for a long-term deal next offseason if a new contract isn’t reached before mid-July.

Miami will have both starting defensive tackles hitting the market in 2014 under their current contracts. Paul Soliai's two-year deal ends after this season.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Starks will be in his sixth season with the Dolphins in 2013. He was originally a third-round pick for the Titans in 2004. Starks recorded 307 total tackles and 32.5 sacks in nine seasons.
